What is gout? Many people are not familiar with this common condition, they don’t take the time to learn about gout until they are experiencing gout symptoms. Usually gout symptoms start very quickly and the pain intensifies almost immediately, so it is important that you understand the condition so that you can begin immediate treatment.

The condition of gout is characterized by swelling and pain in the joint. Many times, the affected area is also warm to the touch and the skin appears red and irritated.

Most people experience gout in the joint of their big toe– the place where the toe meets the foot. Even though the big toe is the most common location, gout symptoms can also be experienced in other joints in the body. If the gout is not treated, it may continue to spread to other joints throughout the body which will cause you even more pain.

Gout is caused by higher levels of uric acid in the body. As the uric acid builds up in the body, it begins to collect in the joints. Uric acid that is collected in the joints may begin to crystallize which causes the gout patient quite a bit of pain.

A gout patient usually begins to experience more severe gout symptoms when the uric acid has crystallized in the joints. Gout pain is always described as excruciating and very uncomfortable. Most gout patients report that pain is felt all the time, but it intensifies when the aggravated area is touched or moved.

These uric acid levels can be elevated by many different factors: dehydration, food consumption, etc. The most important thing that you can do to find gout relief is to focus on your diet, eat foods that will keep your uric acid levels low.
